Lewis Neikrug, HIAS overseas director, who returned last week to the United States after a 15-month stay in Europe, revealed last night that HIAS has completed negotiations with French governmental and military authorities for the admission into Frence of an unlimited number of Jewish DP’s from Germany and Austria for work in eleven specified industrial and professional fields.
The agreement which was reached with French occupation officials in Germany and Austria and the French National Office of Immigration, calls for the issuance of work contracts in the following categories: farmers, glass workers, locksmiths, are welders, machinists, lathe operators, miners, industrial chemical workers, tinsmiths, sheet ##metal workers, and plumbers.
Neikrug also reported that in the first eight months of 1947, HIAS helped 17,068 Jews in 20 European nations to emigrate or be repatriated. He said that of these, 4,847 went to the United States, 3,784 to Palestine, 3,567 to Latin America, 1,435 to Australis, 202 to Canada, 2,452 to various European nations, and 801 to other countries outside Europe.
