A decision to prolong for one year the activities of the HIAS in Germany and Austria, after the International Refugee Organization goes out of existence in the DP areas on January 1, 1952, was adopted here during the week-end at a meeting of the HIAS board of directors.
The action was taken after Isaac L. Asofsky, executive director, reported his findings in the DP areas during a recent survey he made abroad. HIAS was scheduled to curtail its activities in the former enemy countries simultaneously with the discontinuance of the I.R.O. However, Mr. Asofsky reported that about 25,000 Jews will remain homeless and amidst “hostile surroundings” and will require immigration aid in the year following the cessation of I.R.O. activities.
