Jewish refugees from the Jerusalem suburbs and the Old City were ordered forthwith to return to their homes by Deputy Commissioner of Jerusalem Keith-Roach, acting on instructions from the High Commissioner, Sir John Chancellor. The refugees affected are from the suburbs Shiloach, Musrara, Damascus Gate, Givat Shaul, Nachlath Zion, Nachlath Achim, and the Old City.
The time has now come when refugees having homes to which to return should do so, the order stated. From October 1, refugees from these sections now sheltered in public buildings will not receive rations. However, many of the refugees are reluctant to act upon this order, claiming that it is impossible for them to return to the neighborhoods which are still unsafe.
SAFED SEPHARDIC QUARTER DESOLATE
The Sephardic quarter of Safed is utterly desolate. The houses, unfit for re-occupation, have become hiding places of Arab ruffians who descend at nightfall to the deserted buildings, whence they snipe at the infrequent Jewish passersby.
Distribution of arms in the villages surrounding Safed still continues, according to a youth found with a revolver, who confessed that an effendi (Continued on Page 4)
gave it to him. Despite lashes, he refused to divulge the giver’s name.
Of all the neighbors, the warlike Druzes in the vicinity of Safed were friendliest to the Jews. During the disturbances they saved a number of Jewish fugitives and now readily supply them with wood and other necessities.
AEROPLANE FIRES AT ARAB MOB, DISPERSES BOYCOTT PROPAGANDISTS
An aeroplane firing in the air Saturday afternoon dispersed an Arab mob outside the Government Offices in Jerusalem. The crowd gathered when Jawdi Al Habab was arraigned for conducting anti-Jewish boycott propaganda.
The crowd milled around the Government Offices and some surged inside the building before the police, assisted by the aeroplane, scattered them. Jawdi Al Habab was released.
The military detachment sent to the children’s colony, Kfar Yeladim, after the recent Arab raid there which resulted in the death of a Jewish watchman, Shalom Elisha, was ordered to remain on guard at the colony until further notice.
The aeroplane carrier “Courageous” left Haifa waters today.
