A high state of tension was reported in Damascus today with many of the roads leading to the Syrian capital blocked by army patrols. United Nations officers returning to the Golan Heights from Damascus have reported heavy troop concentrations west of the city.
They said everyone approaching the area was stopped and thoroughly searched. Syrian troops on the Golan Heights were also reported to have strengthened their positions. They have dug trenches and laid minefields, the reports said.
Maariv reported today that the Soviet Union recently sent large quantities of arms and ammunition to Palestine Liberation Organization units in Lebanon. The U.S. is keeping Israel informed on the terrorist arms build-up in Lebanon, the newspaper said.
