George C. McGhee, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, left by air today for Istanbul, where he will confer with American Ambassadors to Israel and the Arab countries. The Assistant Secretary will meet with American Near Eastern diplomats on Nov. 26.
The State Department today described the visit as “part of a routine series of meetings held with chiefs of mission in various parts of the world.” However, diplomatic sources saw significance in the parley and it was suggested here that Mr. McGhee may be making the trip to brief U.S. diplomats on recent revisions in American Near Eastern policy.
