Over 1, 000 guests representing every stream of Washington society were gathered at the Annual Israel Independence Ball under the patronage of Ambassador and Mrs. Avraham Harman last evening, here. Present were members of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of the Government, the Diplomatic Corps and the community.
Receiving were Justice William o. Douglas, Justice and Mrs. Arthur Goldberg, Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare and Mrs. Anthony Celbrezze, Under Secretary of State and Mrs. Averell Harriman, and Mr. and Mrs. Meyer Mazor, chairmen of the ball. Peace Corps Director and Mrs. Sargent Shriver were honorary chairmen.
A high spot of the evening was a presentation to Metropolitan Opera Tenor Richard Tucker of the Israel Artistic Award, a silver plaque molded on ebony representing a map of Israel and signed by the Ambassador. The inscription reads for “his significant contribution to international amity through the creative arts.” An award of trees, to be planted in Israel was made to the singer, Tony Bennet,
Another feature of the evening was the ball program, featuring an original water color by the well-known sculptor, Chaim Gross, The painting called “Spirit of Israel,” was especially created by Mr. Gross for this event, celebrating Israel’s 16th anniversary.
