Histadrut, the Israel Federation of Labor, today pledged support of the Cabinet’s efforts to resolve the teachers’ dispute in Israeli schools, pledging that the new school year, to commence soon, will open without disturbance.
The Cabinet decided a week ago that the long-pending dispute between a splinter union of high school teachers and the public school system be turned over for settlement to a special committee of the Ministry of Finance. Until now, the matter has been under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education.
The high school teachers broke away from the General Teachers Union, a Histadrut affiliate, last winter, insisting on higher pay rates and other broader benefits. Education Minister Zalman Aranne resigned from the Cabinet when Histadrut insisted that he must not negotiate with the splinter union. Under the Cabinet decision transferring the issue to the Finance Ministry, the special committee has been authorized to negotiate a new collective wage agreement for teachers, but no union was mentioned in the Cabinets mandate.
