The central committee of the Histadruth, the Jewish Federation of Labor, today decided to start the immediate recruiting of 2,500 additional men for the Palestine Jewish units in the British armed forces. The decision was taken following a joint appeal by the Jewish Agency and the Jewish National Council for more Jewish volunteers.
A conference of wives of Jewish servicemen opened in Haifa today to discuss relief and other problems affecting soldiers’ families. The eighty delegates representing thirty towns and settlements, were addressed by E. Perlson, deputy mayor of Tel Aviv who told of the assistance provided families of Palestine Jewish servicemen by the special Jewish committee established for this purpose. Families of servicemen are exempted from taxes in Tel Aviv, he reported, and from paying tuition for their children in the Jewish schools. They also receive free legal aid. About 2,000 children of Palestine soldiers are being cared for in Jewish kindergartens and childrens’ homes, while a total of 325 are provided with full board.
