The war memorial ceremonies attended by 5,000 British-Jewish war veterans in London ###### as an attempt by the Jews of England to demonstrate against growing anti-Semitism in a dispatch to the Voelkischer Beobachter, mouthpiece of Reichsfuehrer Hitler.
The correspondent, referring to Lord Melchett’s address at Albert Hall, in which Sir Oswald Mosley, British Fascist chieftain, was described as a “second-hand Hitler,” reported a lack of agreement “in the Jewish factories of public opinion.” The speech was made at a mass meeting held in connection with the memorial services.
MELCHETT A “PLUTOCRAT”
According to the Beobachter’s account, Lord Melchett, who is described as “the plutocrat principal shareholder in the British chemical industry and poison gas factory,” indulged in “wild abuse” of Mosley, accusing the Fascist of giving tongue to “popular anti-Semitic cries.”
“Till now,” the dispatch averred, “the Jews always contended that there was no anti-Semitism in England, and now Lord Melchett suddenly describes anti-Semitism as popular,”
Speaking at Albert Hall, Lord Melchett characterized Sir Oswald as a “sham.”
“He has been rejected by every political party and, having missed the bus he is now trying to pedal his way to fame on a second-hand bicycle,” Lord Melchett said.
APPEALS FOR ORDER
The speaker appealed against the use of “fisticuffs or catcalls” as means of combatting the Mosleyites, declaring:
“We have always been an orderly people. Let us remain so.”
Lord Melchett pointed out that 50,000 Jews joined the colors during the war, of whom 10,000 were casualties.
Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice. who inspected the Jewish Ex-Servicemen’s parade and also spoke at Albert Hall. asserted:
“It can be no bad thing, particularly in these days when your faith is subject to so much persecution, to remind your fellow countrymen that you are true citizens of the Empire.
“I believe that the spirit of service and comradeship born during the war is going to see us through the difficulties of peace.”
Chief Rabbi Joseph H. Hertz and Neville Laski were other speakers.
