Holiday Servces Undisturbed for First Time in Soviet Russia

A possible change in the attitude of the Soviet Government toward religion is seen by some here in the passive policy pursued by the Soviets during the recent Jewish High Holidays.

For the first time since the communists have been in power, no attempt was made by either the government or by quasi governmental organizations to interfere with the celebration of the holidays.

None of the burlesquing of the Jewish religious festivals, nor the carnivals which in the past had been deliberately staged on the Jewish sacred days took place recently.

Some theatrical performances, river excursions, and frolics were indulged in by the Communists but all of these were of a mild character and nothing was done to interfere with the religious observances of others.

According to the “Emmes”, the organ of Jewish Communists, many would-be worshippers applied to the Communist organizations to intervene and force the synagogues to reduce their ticket prices. The Jewish Communists however refused to intervene.
