More than a thousand friends of the Rev. Dr. F. de Sola Mendes gathered in the West End Synagogue, Congregation Shaaray Tefila, West Eighty-second Street Sunday morning to take part in the golden jubilee of Dr. Mendes as minister of the congregation. For the first three years, Dr. Mendes was the assistant rabbi; for forty-four years he was rabbi, and since 1920 he has been Rabbi Emeritus.
Morris A. Magner, President of the synagogue, on behalf of the congregation, presented a purse to Dr. Mendes.
Dr. Mendes preached the sermon. His topic was “Watching Over Israel”. He told of fifty years of endeavoring to watch over his sheep. The Rev. Dr. Nathan Stern. who was elected to succeed Dr. Mendes, offered prayer. The Rev. Dr. Kaufmann Kohler, President Emeritus of Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati made an address of felicitation and then pronounced the benediction.
