Julius Rosenwald, leading American Jewish philanthropist, was highly commended by Herbert Hoover, Republican candidate for President, for his $5,000,000 subscription towards the $10,000,000 fund which is now being completed for the purpose of extending Jewish colonization work in Soviet Russia.
James N. Rosenberg, New York attorney and chairman of the Agrojoint, made public yesterday the text of a letter under date of February 13, 1928, addressed by the then Secretary of Commerce to Mr. Rosenwald. The letter which was made public through the Jewish Telegraphic Agency read:
“When Lewis Strauss was here a short while ago. he recalled the evening at Mr. Warburg’s house in New York where we heard you make your inspiring contribution to the work of the Joint Distribution Committee. He then told me that you had concluded to increase the amount of your offer to $5,000,000. being one-half of the total to be raised here.
“That is indeed a princely benefaction and I believe I know something of the great heart and the willing hand with which it is given. The dedication of that wealth to make it possible for a people who have been starving as petty tradesmen, to return to their ancient calling and become producers of the necessities of life from the soil. is a great experiment in human engineering, and you and I. who have watched together the fruition of so many enterprises born of a realization that the welfare of other human beings is the concern of all of us. can entertain no misgivings for its ultimate success.”
