War Secretary Leslie Hore-Belisha declared today that "other faiths besides the catholic" were indebted to Pope Pius, in an obvious reference to the Pope’s many statements in denunciation of persecution of racial and religious minorities.
Speaking at the inauguration of a new annex to the Notre Dame High School at Plymouth, the War Secretary, who is a Jew, said: "Other faiths besides the Catholic are under debt today to the Pope and to some of the Princes of your Church. And whatever gratitude I can command I would desire to express it to you most reverently. Every age has known its martyrs and every age has produced its great men. Among the noblest of men of this age is the head of your Church. Contrary to the common adage, there are moments when silence is silver and speech is golden."
