The House today voted final approval of the report of the Senate-House Conference which recommended $70,228,000 in Mutual Security Aid for Jewish refugees in Israel. The Senate is expected to follow suit by the end of the week. The conference also agreed on $2,772,000 in technical assistance to the Jewish State.
After both Houses act on the conference report, the bill will be sent to the White House. Before the funds may be transferred, a further piece of legislation, known as an appropriation bill, is necessary. The present bill establishes the authorization on which the appropriation bill will be based.
While the general reduction made by Congress in the Administration’s recommendations for aid was in the neighborhood of 20 percent, Congress reduced the appropriation for Israel by less than eight percent.
Israel Ambassador Abba S. Eban expressed satisfaction today over the progress made in the grant-in-aid program for Israel and said it reveals the strength of the sympathy for Israel held by the American people.
