The House of Representatives has extended the Middle East Peace Facilitation Act for another 45 days.
The measure, which is set to expire Aug. 15, allows money to flow to the Palestine Liberation Organization. The bill also waives laws that prohibit diplomatic contact with the POLO.
The Senate is expected to take up the measure in the coming days.
Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) pledged his personal support for extending the measure.
“It’s important to keep the peace process on track,” Dole said in a brief interview after meeting with three rabbis to discuss the peace process.
“I’m committed to a 45-day extension,” the Senate majority leader said.
Rabbis from across the religious spectrum met with Dole to deliver a letter signed by 650 Reform, Reconstructionist, Conservative and Orthodox rabbis. The letter expressed support for the measure.
