Legislation to curb Nazi, Communistic and similar subversive propaganda activities in the United States, as well as to make punishable any conspiracies to overthrow the government, may be submitted to Congress this Winter by the McCormack committee, it was indicated here today by Representative Dickstein.
The second day of the open hearing on Communistic activities, brought additional pressure for such legislation from a number of organizations, including the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the War and Navy Departments, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Brigadier General Alfred T. Smith, speaking for the War Department, charged an attempt was being made to penetrate military service by distributing handbills and other propaganda in camps and war colleges.
“Communism is penetrating the Army, Navy and National Guard,” he asserted. “Preachers of Communism urge young Communists to join the Army and Navy to get on the inside to do their work.”
URGES LEGISLATION
The efforts of these Communists have not met with a great deal of success, he pointed out, however.
