Hull Asks Britain for Assurances on American Rights in Palestine

SECRETARY OF STATE CORDOLL HULL REVEALED TODAY THAT THE UNITED STATES HAD DEMANDED ASSURANCES FROM GREAT BRITAIN THAT THIS COUNTRY’S RIGHTS AND THOSE OF ITS CITIZENS WILL BE SAFEGUARDED IN ANY CHANGES IN PALESTINE UNDER THE BRITISH PARTITION PLAN.

IN REPLY BRITAIN NOTIFIED THIS GOVERNMENT THAT IT WOULD BE KEPT FULLY INFORMED REGARDING DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PALESTINE SITUATION.

THE UNITED STATES NOTE, SETTING FORTH ITS REQUESTS FOR “SAFEGUARD” AND THE BRITISH ANSWER WERE MADE PUBLIC BY MR. HULL. HIS ACTION WAS TAKEN UNDER THE 1924 TREATY WITH BRITAIN SETTING FORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS WITH RESPECT TO THE HOLY LAND AND GUARANTEEING THAT NO CHANGES WERE TO BE MADE THERE AFFECTING AMERICAN CITIZENS WITHOUT CONSENT OF THIS GOVERNMENT.
