The bill imposing severe new restrictions on Jews in the nation’s economic and cultural spheres will be enacted and put into effect about April 25, it was predicted here today.
Meanwhile, it was revealed that Justice Minister Tasnadi-Nagy has not accepted a suggestion that preferential treatment of war veterans be extended to all holders of the Charles Troops Cross which was awarded to all who fought at the front at least three months. He is understood to have insisted that exemptions be restricted to the bearers of several decorations.
With regard to war invalids and former war prisoners, only minor ameliorating amendments have been adopted in committee of the Upper House. Provisions in the bill referring to converts were modified under pressure of all church representatives headed by the Primate. As amended, the clause no stipulates that a Jew baptized before January 1, 1939, whose ancestors lived in Hungary before 1848, will be regarded as a citizen with full rights 20 years after his conversion.
The joint committee continued its debate on the bill today with a plenary session of the Upper House convened for tomorrow.
