Catholic and Protestant churches in Hungary have assisted many Jews who are fleeing from Nazi persecution, according to an article in the Swedish newspaper Stockholms-Tidningen. The newspaper said its information came from a traveller who left Budapest on April 10.
The traveller reported that at least 25,000 Jews were deported the first 10 days of the occupation. Jews were often kidnapped, he said, and then completely disappeared. One by one, members of families were arrested. A family was seldom seized as a group.
