Sharp criticism of the corruption characterizing the confiscation of Jewish-owned property in Hungary and the charge that such expropriation is a violation of the principle of private property is voiced by Count George Pallavicini, member of one of the most prominent families in Hungary, in an open letter to Premier Nicholas von Kallay, appearing in the Budapest daily Esti Kurir, which was received here today.
Pointing out that von Kallay’s prestige will suffer if government officials are allowed to benefit directly from the seizure of Jewish property, the Hungarian nobleman demands that “if measures against Jews are unavoidable, control of the property should be taken out of the hands of interested parties”
Confiscation of Jewish possessions was decreed by Kallay even before such a proposal was formally submitted to Parliament, Pallavicini emphasizes, urging that “if the bill is approved by both houses, as no doubt it will be, it should at least be enforced with clean hands.”
