An admission that the Hungarian Government’s policy of expropriating Jewish-owned agricultural holdings is causing “great damage to the national economy” was made in the Hungarian parliament, in the course of a debate on the “Jewish question,” it is reported in Budapest papers reaching here today.
Several spokesmen of the rightist opposition to the Government criticized the bill providing for the confiscation of Jewish farm land, charging that “from the moment that the Jews feel that their ownership of the land is threatened they cease tilling it. It is not important who possesses the land, but how it is cultivated.”
Other deputies, however, demanded that the government immediately take steps to “Aryanize” all big Jewish commercial and industrial enterprises.
