Imre Kallos, secretary of the Labor Camps Veterans Association, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today that he has applied to the War Ministry to grant posthumous military status to the victims of the labor camps in order that their families may receive pensions. The ministry has agreed to take the suggestion under consideration. Most of the inmates of the camps were used to construct military installations on the Russian front.
Jewish victims of atrocities at the camps will be reburied on Sunday in the Budapest Jewish cemetery, following action by the Veterans Association.
Although the law provides for exhumation and reburial of camp victims by the local authorities in the district where mass graves are found, little has been done in this respect because of the poverty of provincial administrations. The Associations, therefore, secured funds from the families of some of the victims and from the JDC to finance the reburial.
