Moses W, Beckelman, vice-chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee’s European Council, was today received by Vice-Premier Mathias Rakosi and Economic Minister Zoltan Vas both of whom expressed appreciation for the J.D.C.’s aid to needy Hungarian Jews since the liberation.
Beckelman, who is here on a tour of the agency’s Eastern European installations, is conferring with Jewish leaders and has assured them that the recent reduction in funds to the J.D.C. throughout Europe as a result of the needs in Israel will not affect the relief programs, but will be met by reducing administrative and related expenditures.
The J.D.C. official also declared that the problem of his agency is greater here than elsewhere, because 20 percent of Hungary’s Jews are over 60 and must be supported by relief rather than retrained to support themselves. He added that elsewhere in Eastern Europe the J.D.C. is having greater success in retraining Jews who have lost or are in the process of losing their former occupations in the changing economic order.
