The homecoming of the Hungarian Jewish winners at the Olympic games was officially taken notice of by the government and municipal authorities and a hearty welcome was accorded them on arrival in the capital.
Municipal cars and official carriages waited at the railway station to take the returning victors and their families to the banquet arranged in their honor.
The former cabinet member Rakovsky, notorious anti-Semite, embraced Attila Petscchauer, winner of the fencingteam, at the Budapest depot in recognition of his achievement. Count Klebelsberg, Minister of Education, sent a telegram of thanks in the name of the fatherland to Doctor Mezoe, another Jewish champion. A hearty reception was accorded to Narta, the only Jewish member of the Hungarian water polo team. The government newspapers, as well as the anti-Semitic newspapers which are usually eager to point out the Jewish origin or faith of persons not in public favor, ignored the fact that the celebrated Olympic champions are Jews.
