The Hungarian government has promised the Hungarian anti-Semitic student associations strict enforcement of the numerus clausus against the Jewish students, in return for a promise to maintain peace, Minister of Education Balint Homan revealed today.
Not only will the numerus clausus be applied to the universities, but in addition, only a small number of Jewish pupils will be permitted to pass their final matriculation examinations in the secondary schools, thus preventing Jews from studying, the Minister of Education declared.
At the University of Szegelin, Jewish students complained to the rector that in spite of the assurances they had received, attacks against them are continuing. They announced their decision to stay away from all lectures during the term. The rector admitted the attacks on the Jews and promised not to deduct credit for the term, since the absence of the students was forced, not voluntary.
The festival of the Jewish girls union at the University of Szegedin was broken up today by stench bombs thrown by anti-Semites.
Further disturbances by anti-Semitic student groups occurred today at the Polytechnic Institute of the University of Budapest.
The Minister of Education threatened to close the institute for the rest of the term unless peace is reestablished by Wednesday.
