There are indications that King Hussein of the Hedjaz supported by his sons, is once more beginning to feel his way toward the re-establishment of an Arab Caliphate in Mecca. Hints of such an intention on the part of Hussein are beginning to appear in various organs inspired by the Hedjaz ruler.
The time has come, says one of these writers for the whole question of the Caliphate to be revised by a representative Moslem conference. There could be, it is suggested, no place so fitting for such a conference as Mecca and no candidate for the Caliphate so eligible as King Hussein.
As long ago as the beginning of this year Hussein was expressly described as “Commander of the Faithful” in an inscription on a cathedral mosque built at Amman.
The reestablishment of the Arab Caliphate would mean not only the renewal of the tradition forcibly broken in the sixteenth century, but would stir the Arab imagination and mark an important stage in the Arab national movement.
