Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Hyman Bass, executive director of the Congress for Jewish Culture, who died here yesterday after a long illness. He was 79 years old. Bass, who was executive director of the Congress at the time of his death, had held that post for the past 35 years.
Born in Vilna, he came to the United States in 1922 and become active in Yiddish education, serving as a teacher in Yiddish schools of the Workmen’s Circle and in other Yiddish agencies. He published several volumes of essays on Yiddish literature and had been on the editorial board of Zukunft, the monthly publication of the Congress, for many years.
Bass served as a trustee of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture and of the American Association for Jewish Education, and had been treasurer, vice president and president of the Jewish Book Council. He also had been a member of the board of the Jewish Daily Forward Publication Association.
