With 175 delegates present from seven Southern States, the fifty-fifth annual convention of District Grand Lodge No. 7, Independent Order B’nai Brith, was opened here on Sunday at the Rice Hotel. Edgar Goldberg, publisher of the Texas Jewish Herald, is general chairman of the convention.

Maurice Hirsch of Houston, president of District Grand Lodge No. 7, presided at the morning sessions. Rabbi Henry Cohen of Galveston delivered the invocation.

“The anti-defamatory work of the B’nai Brith,” he said, “has been effective in an untold number of instances.”

Myron M. Goldman of New Orleans, district secretary, presented his report, following that of the president.

Leon Schwarz, mayor of Mobile, Ala., is serving as mayor pro-tem of Houston for three days, having been appointed to the post Sunday by Mayor Oscar Holcomb as a special courtesy to the 500 delegates and visitors to the fifty-fifth annual convention of District Grand Lodge No. 7, B’nai Brith.
