Strong representations have been made by Director-General J. Donald Kingsley of the International Refugee Organization to the United Nations on the future status of the refugees and displaced persons remaining in Germany, Austria and Italy after the I.R.O. ends its existence next June 30.
The Director-General pointed out that the refugees will probably be subject to discrimination unless protected by an international agreement. At the same time, he pointed out, it will be necessary to pay the governments or authorities concerned with providing permanent care for the DP’s. He also stated that he considers this a matter for U.N. General Assembly consideration.
(The World Jewish Congress today called on the United Nations to provide full international protection for refugees and displaced persons, after the termination of the I.R.O., by appointing a High Commissioner for the purpose. The request was made in a letter sent to Trygve Lie, U.N. Secretary General.)
