The Israel Defense Force has issued a directive in the town of Nabatiya in south Lebanon forbidding the display of photographs of foreign religious leaders such as the Ayatolah Khomeini of Iran and other prominent Shiite figures. The local commander has also wamed the Shiite leaders to try and stop local residents from cooperating with “hostile elements.”

The directive was issued as there has been a noticeable upswing in number of attacks on the Israeli forces in south Lebanon. Yesterday, an IDF soldier was lightly wounded when a grenade was tossed at his patrol four Kilometers east of Jouie village. He was treated for shrapnel wounds in his legs and remained with his unit.

Meanwhile, IDF soldiers continued to search the town of Nabatiya for suspects involved in last weekends killing of an Israeli soldier and the wounding of two other soldiers. The soldier’s death brought to 589 the number of Israelis killed in Lebanon since the start of war in June, 1982. There have been more than 20 terrorist attacks on Israeli forces in the month of August.
