An Israel Defense Force patrol killed three suspected infiltrators from Egypt in the Negev Wednesday and is still conducting an extensive search for a fourth suspect who escaped.
An IDF spokesman said evidence was discovered Wednesday that the four people breached the Israel border from Egyptian territory.
After the alert, a patrol spotted a suspicious looking vehicle traveling northward from a location south of Mitzpe Ramon.
The car was ordered to stop. When it tried to escape, the patrol opened fire, killing three of the four people inside.
The infiltrators have not yet been identified, the IDF spokesman said, and no weapons or documents were found with them.
The incident snarled traffic in the Negev, forcing the closure of the main highway to Eilat for some time Wednesday.
