Congress will continue to restrict immigration, according to Albert Johnson, chairman of the House Committee on Immigration, who defended the present immigration law in a speech last night before members of the American Defense Society at the Hotel Biltmore.
“Congress will not turn the immigration question over to a commission,” he said, “with power to increase or decrease the flood. The United States has too many Federal commissions now, and a commission with power to feed near-serf laborers into the mines and mills would be the worst commission of all”.
He defended the quota system as productive of the best results.
