Watson Miller, newly-appointed Commissioner for Immigration and Naturalization, last night told the 52nd annual encampment of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S. that during a recent conference with President ?man he was ordered to work out a plan for the alleviation of the plight of the DP’s.
Miller added that the President is deeply interested in the problem of the DP’s and the part which the U.S. can play in providing a home for them. He also emphasized America’s 300-year-old tradition as a haven of the oppressed.
Another speaker, American Legion National Commander James F. O’Neil, revealed that the Legion now has a commission overseas investigating the DP situation with a view to reconsidering its policy on immigration of DP’s. However, O’Neil pointed out ?t the Legion, which has opposed all attempts to lower the bars to DP immigration, ?ists that any immigration changes be made only after all veterans have jobs and ?sing.
