Deputy Premier Yigal Allon reported to the Cabinet today that immigration to Israel during the first six months of the existence of the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption, which he heads, represented a 34 percent increase over immigration during the corresponding period of the previous year. Mr. Allon said that from the beginning of November, 1968 to the end of April, 1969 there were 15,262 new arrivals compared to 11,400 during the same months of 1967-68.
He said that of the newcomers, 9,597 declared themselves immigrants on arrival, 4,526 came as temporary residents with the intention of registering as immigrants at a later stage; and 1,139 were tourists who decided to remain permanently. The figures did not include 1,182 Israelis who returned home after long periods abroad and are being looked after by the Ministry.
Mr. Allon said his Ministry also looks after 4,400 overseas students presently in Israel and expects their number to be increased by 100 next year. In addition, he said, 1,500 students are expected to come to Israel for one year courses of study during 1969. He said the number of yeshiva students from abroad is 1,100 of whom 700 have registered with the Ministry. Mr. Allon stated that there is complete cooperation between his Ministry and the Jewish Agency.
