Sharp criticism of the present immigration law was voiced here today by Deputy Mayor Henry Epstein at the opening of new quarters of the Bramson ORT Trade School which provides free training in the garment trades to recent Jewish immigrants. More than 10,000 refugees have graduated from the school, it was announced at the ceremony.
Deputy Mayor Epstein said that the McCarran-Walter Immigration Act is “incompatible with free world leadership.” He also called for a “generous interpretation” of the Refugee Relief Act. The City of New York, he declared, stood ready to receive its share of the 209, 000 newcomers whose admission was authorized by this Act.
