The more American Jews contribute for needs in Israel, the larger will be the number of Jewish immigrants without means who will be brought to Israel, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency, told representatives of the press here today prior to his return to the United States, following the conclusion of the Agency’s plenary session.
“One of the most important achievements of the present session of the Jewish Agency was its embarking on a policy of sound financial management which was made nearly impossible last year by the colossal influx of immigrants to Israel,” Dr. Goldmann said. “The Agency adopted the principle of a balanced budget without increasing its deficit, while maintaining the principle of free Jewish immigration into Israel and the right of every Jew wishing to enter the homeland. It fixed its obligations to organize and prepare the transport, as well as to take care of immigrants who have no means, according to the Agency’s financial resources.”
Dr. Goldmann also emphasized that the Jewish Agency meeting “contributed much to clarify the difficult problems of the relations between the Agency and the Israel Government,” although no definite decision was reached at this session. A joint committee of both will work out practical proposals, he said. Full agreement was also reached at the Agency’s session among all parties represented in the Agency’s executive, Dr. Goldmann stated.
