Of the 35 to 40 delegates who are to represent American Zionists at the forthcoming Zionist Congress in Zurich. a large majority will go as the representatives of the administration of the Zionist Organization of America, early returns in the Zionist Congress elections held in the United States for the first time on Sunday, June 9, indicate.
According to reports received up to noon on Monday by the Zionist Election Board, headed by Dr. Nathan Ratnoff and Rabbi Wolf Gold, 7,000 votes were cast in Greater New York and about 25,000 throughout the country, including the 7,000. According to a preliminary count 40% of the vote in New York City was cast for the delegates representing the Mizrachi, Orthodox Zionist organization. Six tickets representing all shades of opinion in the Zionist movement competed in the elections. The right to vote was open to any Jew who is either a member of a Zionist organization, club or society or who paid at the poll the Shekel, that is a fee of 50 cents indicating affiliation with the World Zionist Organization.
The names of about 150 candidates were offered on the six tickets representing the Zionist Organization of America, the Mizrachi, the Hitachduth labor group, the Poale Zion, the Zionist Revisionists and the opposition group termed on the ballot, Herzl Zionists. Of the latter ticket only Judge Julian W. Mack was likely to have been elected, it was said.
A final meeting of the election board is scheduled to take place Tuesday afternoon at the headquarters of the Zionist Organization. 111 Fifth Avenue, when the result of the election will be ascertained.
