The situation of the needy Jews in Belgium is becoming more critical daily as the result of an influx of repatriates liberated from German concentration camps at Oswiecim, Buchenwald and elsewhere, Dr. Joseph Schwartz, European director of the Joint Distribution Committee, reported today in a cable to the home office of the JDC here.
The JDC, he revealed, has already appropriated this year $735,000 for assistance to the Jews of Belgium and is cooperating closely with SHAEF and Belgian authorities in conducting its relief program there. He also reported that the JDC committee in Belgium recently rushed an emergency grant of $10,000 to the 800 persons liberated from the Westerbork camp in Holland. Dr. Schwartz recommended that the JDC increase its monthly $85,000 appropriation for Belgian Jews by an additional $25,000
