The influx of Hungarian Jewish refugees has surpassed the worst expectations of Austrian and world Jewish communal representatives here. As of today there are some 2,500 Hungarian Jews, including 250 children, registered with Jewish agencies in this country.
The Vienna community is caring for 2,000 of them with most of them put up in Vienna hotels and in three, institutions near Vienna. Wilhelm Krell, director of the community, said that thus far it has been able to feed all newcomers. Another 500 refugees are sheltered by the Joint Distribution Committee in Linz and Salzburg. They are quartered chiefly in private homes.
The majority of the refugees hesitate to emigrate farther than Austria, hoping that a turn in the political situation will enable them to return to their homes.
