The Zionists should be "carefully optimistic" concerning the prospects of the Jewish state because of "alarming events on the horizon," ?mil Sandstroem, former chairman of the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine, today told a meeting of 2,000 Jews celebrating the U.N. partition decision.
In his first speech since his return from Lake Success, Sandstroem praised Jewish colonization work in Palestine and described the Haganah as the strongest military force in the Middle East. He received a tremendous ovation from the audience and was thanked by Swedish Zionist leader Hugh Valentin for his contributions to the solution of the Palestine problem.
The news of the U.N. decision on partition was received with great joy by Jews throughout Sweden. Many Jewish leaders expressed their pride in the fact that Sweden’s representatives on UNSCOP had played so important a role in the final decision and lauded the role of their country’s delegation at Lake Success.
