Interior Minister Yosef Burg told the Knesset today that he planned to post stricter regulations regarding entry to Israel to keep out so-called “undesirables.” He was referring to purported Jewish and other criminal elements from abroad who seek haven in Israel.
Dr. Burg said he intended to amend the 1955 entry laws because “they were inadequate for current needs.” The new regulations, he said, would clearly define under what conditions foreign nationals would be permitted to enter. One of the reasons for tightening the rules, he said, was because “we have been witnessing the phenomenon of citizens of states friendly to Israel who wrongly exploit the hospitality of this country.” He said the border control officials “have been helpless to act in the face of this development.”
