Post-war guarantees against anti-Semitism, Jewish participation in the trial of war criminals, international assistance in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Jewish life in Poland, reparations for property of Jewish individuals and institutions destroyed by the Germans and support of Jewish aspirations in Palestine were among the demands presented today by Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, president of the American Federation of Polish Jews, addressing the opening session of the World Conference of Polish Jewry at the Hotel Commodore. Three hundred representatives from 20 countries are attending the meeting.
Rep. Emanuel Celler told the delegates that the United Nations must guarantee that the anti-Semitic policies of the pre-war Polish Government will never return. Stressing that the Jewish population of Poland was almost completely exterminated by the Germans, Rep. Celler said that “we cannot fail to aid Polish Jewry” both materially and spiritually.
The evening session of the conference was addressed by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, president of the World Jewish Congress and Eliczer Kaplan, treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Palestine. Messages hailing the conference and expressing the hope that it will be successful in marshalling aid for the Jews in Poland were received from President Truman, Gov. Dewey, Secretary of War Stimson, Secretary of Commerce Wallace, Philip Murray, William Green, Senator Wagner and other notables.
