Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, addressing today the closing session of the Congress of the International Union of Municipal Authorities told hundreds of delegates about Israel’s efforts in absorbing thousands of immigrants and particularly about the work of reclaiming desert areas of the Negev.
He also reported on problems of development and settlement, especially in the underdeveloped areas to the delegates from five continents who earlier in the day toured Jerusalem. They placed wreaths on the tomb of Theodor Herzl and on that of the late Gershon Agron, former mayor of Jerusalem who had been a member of the organization’s executive.
During a visit to Mount Zion, a special service for world peace was held. Mayer Mordechai Ish Shalom of Jerusalem gave a luncheon in honor of the municipal officials and a final working session was held in the afternoon. Moshe Shapiro, Minister of the Interior, gave a reception in honor of the delegates.
