The Embassy of Iraq today issued a lengthy statement urging “Arab unity” against Israel.
The Iraqis took pains to quote the statement from the Iraqi throne Dec, 1,1953, that “nothing will save the Arabs from their present predicament and enable them to resist effectively the growing menace of Israel and contribute to the maintenance of peace and security in this part of the world except by the fulfillment of Arab unity.”
The Embassy statement said that Iraq, at the most recent meeting of the Council of the League of Arab States, submitted a proposal for the establishment of an “Arab Union.” This proposal, said today’s statement; “received the enthusiastic support of Iraqi public opinion and was acclaimed in other Arab countries as a further proof of Iraq’s firm belief in the aims and purposes of the Arab national movement, which has consistently striven to unite the Arab peoples.”
