Irvington Nazi Rioters Held for Grand Jury

Eleven persons who participated in the riot between Nazi sympathizers and their foes here on May 21, were held today by order of Police Recorder Thomas J. Holleran for investigation by the Grand Jury. They include the following:

Charles Yaeger, Ludwig Gruenwald, William Becker, Walter Muser, William Altman, Armin Ardeiter, Robert M. Schramm, William S. Rinner, Louis Halper, Samuel Schwartz, Jerome Rodberg.

GOVERNOR HAD CALLED CONFERENCE, ASSURING PROTECTION

Within a few hours after government representatives had assured a conference of Jewish citizens that the anti-Jewish attacks by members of the National Radical (Nara) party would be stopped by the authorities, a gang of Naras today invaded the heavily populated Jewish quarter, Nalewski, and attacked a number of Jews.

The renewed attacks of the Naras came after a series of violent outrages had led the office of the district governor of Warsaw earlier in the day to call a conference of representatives of Jewish citizens. The government representative assured the conference that the anti-Jewish attacks would be stopped and that there was no need for a state of panic among the Jews.

The government official requested the Jewish representatives to influence Jewish youth against provocations, adding that although the Jews had provoked some of the incidents which have occurred here in recent weeks, these cases were few and isolated.

Deputy Wislicki, Jewish member of the Sejm, replied to this

suggestion with the statement that the Jews had no intention of voluntarily with drawing into a ghetto and not venturing on the public streets. They would not allow themselves to be beaten up and would defend themselves if attacked, he asserted.

DEPUTY REPORTS OUTBREAKS

After receiving assurances of government action the delegation left the office, but Deputy Wislicki had to return later in the day to report to Governor Jaroszewicz of new anti-Semitic out breaks after the authorities had promised to act.

The district governor also conferred with representatives of Jewish Leftist organizations, the Bund and the Right and Left Poale Zion. The labor parties, the Polish Socialist party, the Right Poale Zion and the Bund, organized separate mass meetings of protest against the Nara attacks, adopting strongly-worded resolutions.

Jewish Communists attempted to upset the meeting of the Poale Zion, Labor Zionist group, but were driven off after causing brief disorders with shouts and taunts against the Zionist laborite policy on Arab labor in Palestine.
