Is Jewish life in America to develop and continue its existence as a district, self-conscious, creative entity or is it to be engulfed by the tides of the surrounding life and culture? There are many who are extremely pessimistic on this subject. But Mr. S. Niger. writing in the “Day” of Dec. 25. sees new forces arising in the midst of American Jewry that will in his opinion, overcome all hostile. disintegrating influences. He likens the processes now going on in American Jewry to the fight between David and Goliath. David representing the spirit to live and subdue hostile forces, Goliath representing the destructive influences from within as well as from without. Mr. Niger scolds the pessimists and says:
“Does not the growing interest in the education of our young generation in this country prove that the spirit of David is in the ascendant in us? And is not every new school we established, every new Jewish cultural institution, a fortress to at- tack the Goliath without and the Goliath within our gates?
“It is time to stop threatening us with his might. We are aware of it. We know the difficulties of the road which we are beginning to tread. But we are undaunted by this fate, for it is the fate of the Jewish people to tread difficult roads.”….
