Israel has undertaken to pay $14,400,000 in compensation to the Templars, a German Christian sect, for property taken over by the Israel Government, it was announced here today.
The members of the sect, which today numbers about 1,500 persons, are descendants of a group that broke away from the Lutheran Church in Germany more than 100 years ago. After emigrating to Palestine shortly before the outbreak of World War II, they established flourishing farming communities. In 1941, they were sent by the British to Australia as German national internees. After the war, they were joined by other members of the sect who migrated from Germany. Each member of the sect will receive nearly $9,000 in compensation from the Israeli Government.
