The El Al airline, a government-subsidized company, today officially inaugurated a regular weekly schedule from Lydda to Paris, London, Zurich and Rome.
The Lydda-Paris run has been in operation for some time. The Israel company has already concluded pacts with foreign airlines which make it possible for passengers reserving passage through El Al to obtain tickets through to New York, Vienna, Munich and Prague.
At a formal ceremony, presided over by Minister of Communications David Remez, the government yesterday celebrated its first year of operation of the Lydda airfield. During that year 1,600 planes, carrying 80,000 passengers, made use of its facilities, against the 27,000 passengers who landed or took off there during 1947, the peak year of the Palestine Mandate’s administration. Minister Remez revealed that 100,000 pounds had been spent in improving the airport last year.
