Israel and the Soviet Union have agreed to raise the rank of their envoys to each other’s governments from minister to ambassador, it was announced here last night.
This move means that now all of the Big Four powers are represented in Israel by ambassadors. The announcement came one month after a Soviet-Egyptian agreement to raise their envoys to the rank of ambassador. With the change in states both Shmuel Eliashiv, Israel Minister in Moscow, and Alexander Abramov, his Soviet counterpart in Israel, will have to present new credentials to the heads of the states to which they are accredited.
It is understood that Israel and the USSR are now negotiating for an exchange of visits of prominent figures in the arts and in sports.
