The Soviet Government can prove that it has abandoned its recent anti-Jewish policy by permitting emigration to Israel of those Soviet Jews who desire it. Senator Alexander Wiley, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told a meeting here last night at which Israel’s fifth anniversary was celebrated.
The Senator praised Israel’s efforts at self-help and warned the Arabs that “the United States cannot be impressed by what seems to be an attitude in some Arab quarters to the effect: ‘Appease us or else we will go Communist.'”
Israel Ambassador Abba Eban. addressing the meeting, said that Israel and the Arab states have been thrown into “special focus” by the international situation and predicted “those governments in our area which refuse to negotiate a settlement with their neighbors will find themselves increasingly out of touch with the prevailing mood and atmosphere of international relations in our time.” He pointed out that “none of the specific problems which divide Israel and the Arab states are incapable of a negotiated settlement.”
